Like so many businesses owners my journey began with a personal passion; it just so happens that my passion was for riding bikes and building trails. Dirt by Designs has become what it is today because of a lifelong commitment to pushing my own abilities on the Bike and the resulting need to develop trails that progress right along with me.
Growing up racing Dirt bikes and BMX from a very young age it was obvious to everyone that knew me that my life was going to be spent behind bars. I’m very fortunate that the same things that had me grinning from ear to ear at age 6 still keep me smiling today, close to 40 years later. Back when I started riding there was no such thing as a Bike Park. If you wanted to jump your bike you had a couple choices, you could either “borrow” your Dads shovel and head to an empty field or you could “borrow” some plywood and a handful of bricks from the local housing development and voila you had a Bike Park. I wouldn’t trade those early experiences for anything; in fact, those days of youthful exuberance became the inspiration for many of my design and building experience since.
Over the years, I built a reputation for building fun, challenging and immaculately well maintained trails and it wasn’t long before I was being brought in to consult and lend my experience to those in need. Towns and Municipalities needed help to navigate the difficult and unfamiliar process of building a successful Bike Park. It soon became obvious that there was not only a lack of qualified designers in the marketplace there was also a shortage of effective builders and project managers that could translate our designs into a functional and safe facility. Before long I was providing a full compliment of services from initial consultation to the opening day ceremonies. The Parks I have been involved in continue to thrive and continue to inspire kids to this day; the relationships I have built with stakeholders and Communities remains strong.
I’ve been incredibly lucky over the years to have worked with some very motivated and talented builders. My proudest moment and the reason I can call Dirt by Designs a Family company was the addition of my Son in 2013. He is a tester, designer, builder and partner throughout the process of developing a new Bike Park; his youthful insights and views are critical to our success. I am as excited as ever to develop and build new Bike Parks; the process continues to evolve and with new techniques and alternative materials available the quality of these facilities will continue to improve. That will certainly keep me motivated and my wheels spinning well into the future.
